FROM THE VINE TO OUR GLASS: HOW MUCH CAN IMPACT A BOTTLE OF WINE?

THE MAIN INDICATORS TO PRODUCE SUSTAINABLE WINES IN ITALY
During the last decade, and more in the recent years, Italian wineries are looking in their water and carbon (greenhouse gas emission) footprint, and how much they can affect our system. Most of the consumers, doesn’t know how much 1 single bottle of wine can impact our world. From a recent research, 1 bottle of wine can produce about 1.83Kg (4.03Lb) of greenhouse gas emission, when it’s ship to san Francisco, the same bottle produces 2.45Kg (5.40Lb) of Co2.

38% from the packaging (ex. glass bottle, cook label production)
26% transportation
27% grooming the vine (ex. the use of the tractor in the vine)
9% fermentationItalian sustainable wineries, to reduce their carbon/water foot print, are looking to 4 main indicators:

Air: valuates the greenhouse gas emissions directly and indirectly related to the life cycle of a product.

Water: expresses the potential environmental impacts resulting from the use of fresh water.

Vineyard: takes into account the agronomic management practices in the vineyards and in particular it evaluates the use of pesticides and their effect on water bodies and soils.

Territory: In the overall panorama of Italian agriculture, the landscape designed by the cultivation of the vine has a fundamental importance and is already subject to protection.
